Honeydew is a cultivar of the muskmelon (known in the United States as cantaloupe) that probably originated in the Middle East. It is now grown in the southwestern United States and in California, where the season for the fruit is July through September. The honeydew melon has a smooth rind that is greenish yellow, ripening to a creamy white. The flesh is a lovely, pale green and very sweet. The seeds, as with many melons and squashes, are edible if dried and toasted. Honeydew is consumed on its own and in fruit salads and fruit soups. It is also frequently served as a bed or a garnish to cold, summer salads such as chicken or tuna salad. In addition, it is enjoying attention as a unique ingredient in sorbets, smoothies, or alcoholic fruit drinks such as daiquiris or margaritas. In the Middle East, honeydew melon is dried and eaten as a snack food.
Honeydew melon is an excellent source of vitamin C and a good source of potassium.
