Tejocote

Tejocote is a species of hawthorne, sometimes referred to as “Mexican hawthorne” because this small tree grows all over Mexico.  The fruit is a pome, with a few hard, brown seeds at the center.  In size and shape, it resembles a crab apple and, like apples, it is a winter fruit in Mexico.  Tejocote can be eaten raw or cooked, and it is also sold canned in syrup.  It is a component in ponche, the hot fruit punch served in Mexico for Christmas and New Year’s holidays.  It is also used, along with chili powder, to make sweet, spicy candies.  Tejocote can be utilized as an ingredient in the fruity ice pops called paletas that have long been a popular street food in Mexico and are increasingly available and popular in Hispanic communities in the United States.
