Grape

Grapes come in over one thousand varieties that differ in color, size, taste and other physical characteristics. There are three main categories of grapes. European grapes include the Thompson, Emperor, and Champagne/Black Corinth. North American grapes include Concord, Delaware, and Niagara grapes.  French hybrids were developed from the domesticated grape, Vitis vinifera, after the majority of grape varieties in Europe were destroyed in the 19th Century.

Grapes come in a variety of colors including green, amber, red, blue-black, and purple and are often classified according to their use.  Thus, wine grapes are used to make wine, raisin grapes to make raisins, etc. In general, whole grapes have a slightly crunchy texture with a dry, sweet and tart taste.
