The pear is a temperate climate fruit grown in many locations around the world. Like apples, pears are a pome fruit. Pome fruits are those that have a distinct seeded core. Pears are seldom left to ripen on the tree, but when they do ripen the starch converts to sugar, causing the fruit to become softer, juicier, and sweeter.
Over 5000 varieties of pear have been developed. However, only four main varieties are readily available for consumers: Anjou, Bartlett, Bosc, and Comice. Because so many varieties of pears exist and because they are grown in both the southern and northern hemispheres, fresh pears are available year-round.
