Black Currant

Black currant shrubs are native to central and northern Europe and to northern Asia.  The shrubs have a distinctive scent and the berries are a very dark purple, nearly black.  Their taste is so astringent that they are used only in cooking (not eaten raw), but as a flavorant, black currant is as widespread in Europe as grape is in the United States.  Black currant has been used in beverages from beer and vodka to wine and cordials.  It is also used in jellies, jams, candies and ice creams, and its astringent quality can enhance the flavor of meats.

Black currants are high in vitamin C and are known as a “superfruit” because of the protective value they are thought to give against heart disease, diabetes, cancer, and aging.  Concentrated black currant has been shown to be an effective MAOI (monoamine oxidase inhibitor); MAOIs are used in the treatment of depression.  Because of their nutritional value, black currants are also used in smoothies and juice drinks that are marketed to those seeking to promote their health.
