The boysenberry is a hybrid of the loganberry and dewberry, believed to have been created by a Napa Valley farmer named Rudolf Boysen. After he sold his farm, the plants were tracked down by George Darrow of the USDA and Walter Knott. The latter went on to have great success with boysenberry jam at what became the famous Knott’s Berry Farm.
Boysenberries are a bramble fruit grown chiefly in the United States, from the South, all the way west and up the Pacific Coast from California to Oregon. The berries are rather large and purple with red undertones. They are more tart than a raspberry but can be enjoyed raw on top of salads, pancakes, or cheesecakes. They are frequently used in jams and syrups or in sweet desserts like tarts.
Boysenberries have been shown in scientific studies to improve oxidative stress, which is to say that they are particularly effective antioxidants. They are also a good source of vitamin C and fiber.
