Cantaloupe
(Muskmelon, Netted Melon, Kharabiy)

Cantaloupe is an excellent source of such nutrients as vitamin C, beta-carotene, potassium, fiber and vitamin B complex. It is thought to help regulate metabolism and promote blood sugar stability. Because of its high antioxidant content, cantaloupe is currently being studied for its potential health benefits, including its effect on cancer cells, emphysema, and age-related macular degeneration.

The fruit of the cantaloupe is soft and juicy with a sweet, musky aroma and flavor when ripe. Cantaloupe is most often eaten ripe, and is frequently combined with other foods such as cottage cheese and ice cream. Cantaloupe can also be found dehydrated and in juice form, usually in combination with other fruit juices.

Cantaloupe belongs to the same family as cucumber, squash and pumpkin. The fruit that we call cantaloupe in the United States is actually muskmelon. Muskmelon has a netted rind and webbed netting inside. U.S. fruits are hybrids of muskmelons and true cantaloupes. True cantaloupe is grown predominantly in Europe, and is rarely found in the U.S. It has a rough surface and smooth fruit.
